Peace in the Cabin - A Devotional By LeBron Keener

“Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.”
(Proverbs 17:1 KJV)

Way back in the hills of North Carolina, nestled beneath a canopy of pine and poplar, there sat a crooked little cabin on a patch of land folks called Stillwater Hill. It didn’t look like much - just a one-room shack with a wood stove, a rocking chair, and a Bible worn thin from use. But what it lacked in luxury, it made up for in peace.

Old Miss Lottie lived there. A widow of 30 years, she kept a garden in the back, canned her own beans, and made cornbread that could bring a tear to your eye. Folks said her prayers were so strong that if Lottie asked the Lord for rain, you’d best bring an umbrella.

Just a mile down the hill, visible through the trees, stood a mansion so grand it could’ve passed for a courthouse. Marble floors, crystal chandeliers, velvet curtains that cost more than a year’s wages. It was the home of Mr. and Mrs. Camden - wealthy, well-connected, and always bickering. You could hear them some nights, yelling through the open windows. Their table was never empty, but neither were their hearts ever full.

One hot summer evening, a thunderstorm rolled in unexpectedly. Trees fell. Power lines dropped. The Camdens’ security system shorted out, and their basement flooded. Desperate, they climbed the hill, soggy and frazzled, and knocked on Miss Lottie’s door.

She opened with a smile, holding a lantern.

“Come on in,” she said. “I reckon we’ll ride out the storm together.”

She gave them dry clothes, hot tea, and a seat by the fire. No TV. No air conditioning. Just quiet, warmth, and the sound of the rain tapping the tin roof.

That night, something changed. For the first time in years, the Camdens sat together without shouting. They listened as Lottie read a psalm. They bowed their heads while she prayed. They left the next morning with wrinkled clothes but softened hearts.

They’d seen the difference: A mansion may shelter your body, but a peaceful home—no matter how small—shelters your soul.

Devotional Thought:
Proverbs 17:1 reminds us that true joy isn’t found in square footage or fine china. A humble cabin filled with peace is far richer than a grand house full of fighting. It’s not the size of the home - it’s the spirit within it.

We live in a world that chases more: more space, more stuff, more status. But God calls us to pursue peace, contentment, and love. Miss Lottie had little by the world’s standards, but her life overflowed with grace, kindness, and calm.

Which home would you rather live in—a mansion full of stress or a cabin full of peace?

Prayer:
"Lord, help me to seek peace above possessions. Teach me to value stillness, kindness, and quiet joy. Let my home, no matter how big or small, be filled with Your presence and Your peace. Amen.

Reflection Questions:

1. Are you chasing peace, or just possessions?

2. What small changes can you make to bring more peace into your home?

3. How can you be like Miss Lottie—a bringer of calm to others?
