🏕Vacation Time🏕 - Longing For God's Presence, a Devotional By LeBron Keener

“He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He restores my soul.” — Psalm 23:2–3

Imagine a family sitting at the dinner table. They are discussing where to go for their vacation.
"How about the mountains?" the father suggests.
"I would much rather go to the beach," replied the mother.
"We want to go to the lake," added the children.

The three options have one thing in common. They are all natural landscapes that were created by God. Very few people decide to vacation in the concrete jungles of manmade cities with their noise and polluted atmospheres. Instead, we desire a calm place of spiritual healing that can only be found in more natural surroundings... surroundings created by God.

Why is this? There seems to be so much more to do in the cities, so why do we want to go to the mountains, the beach, or the lake?

It's simple. We were created by God just as those natural surroundings that we long for were created by Him. Our spirits do not belong in a man made city that only satisfies our worldly desires. It's the spirit that makes us long for the mountains, the beach, and the lake.

Have you ever slept in a tent in the mountains next to a rushing mountain river while listening to the call of a whippoorwill? Trust me, it's the best sleep you'll ever have in your life, much more peaceful than trying to sleep with the sounds of sirens blaring, tires screeching, or people yelling. They're all sounds, but the difference is that the sounds in God's natural world are from His creation, and the sounds of the city are man-made. So, our spirits are more at peace while we are in His world of nature.

The next time you're thinking about vacation, remember why you're longing for that beach. Remember why the mountains seem to be calling. Remember why you can't wait to jump in the crystal clear waters of the lake. It's because your spirit is missing the presence of God Almighty!

The next time your heart longs for the mountains, the beach, or the lake, recognize the deeper desire at work. It's not just for rest—it's for reconnection. Your spirit is yearning to return to the presence of the One who made you… and made those peaceful places too.

So go. Breathe deeply. Be still. And let Him restore your soul.
