“Then God said, ‘Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.’ And it was so. God called the dry ground ‘land,’ and the gathered waters He called ‘seas.’ And God saw that it was good.” (Genesis 1:9-10)
A few years ago, I found myself sitting alone on the beach under a moonlit sky. My friends had gone for a walk, and I welcomed the solitude. As I sat in the sand with warm ocean water gently washing over my bare feet, I felt a deep spiritual peace settle in my soul. It was more than relaxation—it was healing.
There’s something about water that speaks to our spirit. Whether it's the crashing of waves, the stillness of a lake, or the laughter shared in a pool, we’re drawn to it. It sustains us physically—but also spiritually. Perhaps that’s why water features so prominently in God’s creation story.
In Genesis, God separates the waters, forms the sky, the seas, and then causes life to spring forth—life that is dependent on water to grow and thrive. On the fifth day, He fills those waters with living creatures. On the sixth, He creates animals and humans—beings made in His image, all of whom need water to survive.
Even science reflects this truth: about 71% of Earth is covered in water, and the human body is made up of 60–70% water. This isn’t coincidence—it’s divine design.
When we are near water, we are reminded of our Creator. The oceans and rivers are more than scenery; they are sacred signs of God’s power, provision, and presence. Just as the sea was formed by His word, so were you. You are intricately designed, lovingly made, and deeply connected to His creation.
Reflection Questions:
1. When was the last time you felt God’s presence in nature?
2. How does water—physically or spiritually—refresh your soul?
3. What does it mean to you that God designed both your body and the world around you to rely on water?
Prayer:
Father God, thank You for the gift of Your creation and the water that sustains it. Thank You for moments of peace by the ocean, for rain that nourishes the earth, and for the spiritual refreshment You provide. Remind me that just as You formed the seas with care, You created me with purpose. Help me to draw close to You as naturally as I’m drawn to the water. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
