🕊From Turmoil to Tranquility: A Devotional By LeBron Keener

"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
(Philippians 4:6-7)

Have you ever wondered why you feel anxious or depressed? Or why sometimes you become angry or irritable without any clear reason? What about fear — that uneasy sense that something bad is looming? These feelings are common to all of us, but have you stopped to ask why they arise? Where do they come from?

Ironically, the very things we often believe will bring us happiness — a new car, a beautiful home, fine jewelry — can actually be the root of our struggles. Consider the new car: you worry about someone denting the door, stress over the monthly payments, and feel uneasy as the mileage climbs and the car’s value drops. Or the house you worked so hard to get — you have your vision for decorating, but your spouse has a different idea, leading to conflict. And what about that special piece of jewelry you bought to bring joy? Instead, you find yourself worried it might be lost, stolen, or damaged. Add to that the financial strain these possessions bring, and it’s no wonder peace slips away.

Jesus said in Matthew 6:19-21,
"Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: for where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

So, ask yourself honestly: Why am I anxious? Why am I angry? Why am I depressed?

Now, take a moment to reflect on the fruits of the Spirit — love, peace, joy, patience, self-control, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and gentleness. Can you think of any negative emotion rooted in these? There is none. These fruits bring life and healing.

Here’s the beautiful truth: your spirit can heal the wounds caused by fleshly worries and fears. When you invite Jesus Christ into your heart, He becomes the vine from which these fruits grow. He nurtures them in you, transforming your heart and mind.

You can choose to be joyful in the Spirit rather than miserable in the flesh. Let God’s peace, beyond all human understanding, guard your heart and mind through Christ Jesus.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, I come before You with a heavy heart, burdened by worries, fears, and restless thoughts. Forgive me for placing my hope in things that cannot satisfy or last. Teach me to trust You fully and to find my joy and peace in Your presence alone. Fill me with Your Spirit, and grow within me the fruits of love, patience, and self-control. Guard my heart and mind with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Help me to surrender my anxieties to You daily and to walk in the freedom and joy that only You can give. In Your holy name, I pray. Amen.
