How the Lord Changed Alvin C. York - A Devotional By LeBron Keener

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
(Romans 12:2 KJV)

Alvin Cullum York was born in the rugged hills of Pall Mall, Tennessee - a poor farm boy with more brothers than shoes and a rifle that doubled as his best friend. Known as a crack shot and a bit of a wild card, Alvin spent his early years drinking, fighting, and gambling.

But one night, tragedy struck. A close friend was killed in a bar fight. Alvin stood over the body and felt a weight come crashing down on him. That night, he walked home under the stars and cried out to God.

The mountains echoed his prayers, and something in his heart broke - and began to heal.

Alvin gave his life to Christ and became a changed man. He joined a small church in the holler, sang hymns, and vowed to lay down violence for peace. So when he was drafted into World War I, he faced a fierce battle - not just in France but in his own soul. He didn’t want to fight. Killing, even in war, went against everything he now believed.

He applied for conscientious objector status, but it was denied. After deep prayer and counsel, Alvin decided to go - not for glory, but to protect others and obey what he felt God was leading him to do.

In the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, Alvin York led a charge against overwhelming German forces. With only a handful of men, he captured 132 enemy soldiers almost singlehandedly. He became a national hero. Medals, parades, and fame followed.

But Alvin never bragged. In fact, he said, “I was just doing my duty, and the Lord helped me out.”

When he came home, he didn’t chase riches. Instead, he started a Bible school in the mountains, served his community, and lived humbly, raising crops and children. To Alvin York, being a Christian wasn’t about words - it was about obedience, humility, and faith in action.

Reflection:
Alvin C. York reminds us that true transformation begins in the heart. God took a hard-living backwoods brawler and shaped him into a man of conviction, courage, and compassion.

The world tried to shape Alvin one way, but God renewed his mind and changed his purpose. When we give our lives to Christ, we don’t just turn over a new leaf - we become a new creation.

You might not be called to a battlefield like York, but you are called to live boldly, humbly, and faithfully right where you are.

Prayer:
"Lord, thank You for the power of a changed life. Help me to be transformed by Your Spirit, not conformed to this world. Use my past for Your purpose, and let my life point others to You. In Jesus’ name, amen."

Challenge:
Think of an area in your life where God has changed (or is changing) you. Share that story with someone this week. Like Alvin York, your testimony might just inspire someone to surrender their life to Christ.
