Like a Deer to the Stream - A Devotional By LeBron Keener

“As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.”
(Psalm 42:1 KJV)

The morning fog still clung to the pines when old Daniel set out on his usual hike up Smoky Ridge. It was his time to pray, breathe deep, and be still. At 72, his legs didn’t move as fast as they used to, but his heart still longed for the quiet hush of the mountains—where the world faded and heaven felt near.

As he rounded a bend in the trail, he paused. Just ahead, where the trees opened into a rocky clearing, a young deer stood at the edge of a cold, clear mountain stream.

It was cautious—ears twitching, muscles tight—but its thirst was greater than its fear. Slowly, it lowered its head and drank. Not rushed. Not greedy. Just steady and grateful. Daniel stood perfectly still, watching the rise and fall of the deer’s flanks as it breathed in peace.

He didn’t want to disturb it. Something about that moment felt sacred.

Then a verse stirred in his mind, one he’d learned as a boy sitting on a wooden church pew in Tennessee:

“As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God.”

Tears welled in his eyes.

Because lately, he hadn’t felt that thirst.

He still read his Bible. Still said grace. Still went to church when his knees allowed. But deep down, his soul hadn’t panted after God in a long time. Not like that deer. Not with urgency, or longing, or a desperate need to be filled.

He realized it had all become routine—safe, polite, even dry.

And in that quiet moment by the stream, Daniel whispered, “Lord, make me thirsty again.”

Reflection:
The deer doesn't sip casually. It drinks because it must. Because water is life.

That’s how we’re called to seek God—not out of habit, but hunger. Not as a religious checkbox but a soul-level need. When life feels dry, or your heart feels distant, don’t settle. Let your soul pant after the Living Water.

He’s there. Waiting by the stream.

Prayer:
"Lord, stir in me a fresh thirst for You. I don’t want to live on empty. I want to long for Your presence like a deer longs for water. Quench my spirit, and draw me near again. Amen."

Today’s Challenge:
Find a quiet place today. No phone. No noise. Just you and God. Sit still like Daniel did, and ask Him to restore the thirst in your soul—and be ready to drink deep when He answers.
