But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
(1 Samuel 16:7 KJV)
Emily was born with legs that didn’t work like everyone else’s. While other girls leaped and spun in ballet slippers, she wheeled herself across the hardwood floor of her living room, watching ballet videos until the tape wore thin.
Her favorite was Swan Lake. She’d watch with eyes wide, arms raised like the dancers, mimicking the grace and poise with every delicate motion of her hands. Her mother often found her practicing pirouettes in her wheelchair, pretending she was on stage, a spotlight shining down on her just like the girls at the recital.
“Maybe one day,” Emily would whisper to herself.
But the world wasn’t always kind. At school, other children snickered when she told them she wanted to be a ballerina. “Ballerinas dance on their toes,” one boy said. “You can’t even stand up.”
That night, Emily cried into her pillow. “God,” she prayed, “did You make a mistake with me?”
The next Sunday at church, the pastor preached from 1 Samuel - how God chose David, not because he looked like a warrior, but because He saw his heart.
“The world looks on the outside,” the pastor said, “but God sees your purpose, your passion, your heart.”
Emily sat straighter in her chair.
That week, her mother found a local adaptive dance class. Emily joined, unsure at first. But soon, her arms flowed like poetry, her spirit soaring as music filled the room. She couldn’t leap across a stage, but she could tell a story with her movement. Her joy became contagious. At the recital, she danced from her wheelchair while others danced around her. And when the music ended, the audience rose, not out of pity, but awe.
Emily never stopped dreaming. She just learned to dream differently. And in doing so, she touched hearts more deeply than she ever could have with perfect pirouettes.
Reflection:
Sometimes, our dreams don’t unfold the way we expect. But God never asks for perfection—He asks for faithfulness. The world may judge your ability, but God sees your availability. He sees your heart, your effort, your worship in every movement—whether on a stage, in a wheelchair, or in quiet acts of love.
Prayer:
"Lord, help me to trust that You see beauty in every offering I bring. When the world tells me I’m not enough, remind me that You created me with purpose. Let my life be a dance of praise to You—no matter what it looks like. Amen."
Today's Challenge:
"Is there something you’ve given up on because the world said you couldn’t do it? Ask God to help you see that dream with His eyes. Let Him show you new ways to honor Him through it - even if it looks different than you imagined."
