“When thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”
(Isaiah 43:2 KJV)
It was the kind of summer where the air shimmered off the pavement, and the cicadas sang like they were preaching a revival. In the small town of Oak Hollow, everything moved slow, partly because folks were tired, and mostly because stepping too fast might just cause you to melt.
Tommy Ray had been out fixing fences all morning. Sweat rolled down his back like a leaky faucet, and the sun felt like it had a personal grudge against him. By noon, he’d taken refuge under the one lonely oak tree out by the pasture, guzzling warm water from a dented thermos.
“Lord,” he muttered, “this heat’s about to do me in.”
And that’s when he thought about it, not just the heat outside, but the heat of life lately. Bills piling up. Mama’s health was getting worse. The air conditioning was out at the house. It all felt like too much.
He leaned back, wiped his brow, and looked up at the branches overhead. The leaves barely moved, but they still gave him shade. Just enough to make the difference between burning up and catching his breath.
“Funny,” he whispered. “Didn’t need a blizzard - just a little shade.”
Right then, God reminded him of a verse from a sermon he’d heard years ago:
“When thou walkest through the fire… the flame shall not kindle upon thee.”
Tommy Ray smiled.
God didn’t promise to take away the heat. But He did promise to walk with us through it.
Reflection:
Life brings heat - stress, pressure, loss, frustration, and weariness that makes you want to drop everything and sit in the dirt. But God doesn’t always bring a cold breeze. Sometimes, He just provides shade - a kind word, a quiet moment, a scripture, a friend.
Even in the hottest seasons, His presence is enough to help you breathe again.
Prayer:
"Lord, when the heat of life gets heavy, help me remember that You are my shade, my shelter, and my strength. Thank You for walking with me, even when the fire rages. Amen."
Today’s Challenge:
If you're in a hard season, pause and find one "shade tree" God has placed in your life - a person, a promise, or a quiet place. And if life feels cool and peaceful for you right now, be someone else's shade today.
