The Album of Christmases Past - A Christmas Devotional By LeBron Keener

The Album of Christmases Past

"But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart."
(Luke 2:19 KJV)

It was the first Christmas since Grandma passed away, and the old farmhouse felt different - quieter, like something was missing. Snow fell outside the window in slow, lazy flakes, but inside, the warmth of the fireplace battled the chill of empty chairs and silent rooms.

Emma sat cross-legged on the floor of the attic, sorting through boxes marked “CHRISTMAS.” She was looking for the ceramic nativity Grandma always set out, the one with the chipped shepherd and baby Jesus whose smile seemed to glow a little brighter every year.

But instead, she found something else: a thick, dusty photo album wrapped in faded red ribbon. The front read simply: “Christmas Memories.”

She opened it slowly, and time fell away.

There was a photo of her dad as a boy, barely five years old, holding a wooden train set, grinning from ear to ear. Another of her grandmother, baking cookies in the same kitchen Emma now used - flour on her apron and joy in her eyes. There were pictures of snowball fights, caroling in the front yard, aunts and uncles laughing around the tree. And year after year, Grandma sat at the center of it all - her face radiant with the kind of joy that only comes from a heart full of Jesus.

One photo caught Emma’s breath. It was a black-and-white snapshot from decades ago. Grandma, as a young woman, stood beside a modest tree with homemade ornaments. She held a baby in one arm and a Bible in the other. Someone had written in the corner: “Christmas, 1952 — God has been good.”

Emma gently touched the picture, her heart swelling with something hard to describe - grief, gratitude, and grace all wrapped into one.

She realized then: Grandma’s life had been her Christmas sermon. A quiet testimony captured frame by frame, faith passed on not through grand speeches, but through candlelight services, simple prayers, shared meals, and the patient love of someone who never missed a chance to say, “Thank You, Lord.”

Emma closed the album and whispered, “Thank You, Lord,” too.

Later that evening, she placed the nativity on the mantle and set the photo album right beside it. Not just for decoration but as a reminder. That Christmas isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence. About treasuring the moments, like Mary did, and knowing that behind every flicker of joy, every snapshot of love is the steady hand of a faithful God.

Reflection:
Family albums capture more than faces. They capture faith. The photos fade, but the love behind them endures. As we celebrate Christmas, may we remember that the most important memories aren’t always in the perfect poses, but in the quiet acts of love that reflect Christ.

Prayer:
"Father, thank You for the memories that remind us of Your faithfulness through the years. Help us treasure our moments and pass on a legacy of faith like Mary and those before us. May our lives be albums of grace and joy, pointing others to the heart of Christmas. In Jesus' sweet and Holy name, Amen."
