The Battle Within: Spirit vs. Flesh - A Devotional By LeBron Keener

“Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16)

Every day, a quiet battle takes place within us. The flesh calls out with its desires — for comfort, for pleasure, for control. But the Spirit whispers, too — guiding us toward patience, love, truth, and purpose. The question is not whether the struggle exists but who leads?

When the flesh leads the spirit, life becomes reactionary. We chase what feels good, avoid what feels hard, and gradually drift from our higher calling. Our decisions start to orbit around ourselves — what we want, what we fear, what we crave.

But when the Spirit leads the flesh, everything changes. We begin to live with intention. Our appetites no longer rule us; instead, they are submitted to a greater purpose. We’re no longer driven by impulse but drawn forward by vision, conviction, and trust in God’s direction.

The Spirit-led life is not always easy, but it is rich. It is the life of Jesus — one of surrender, power, and peace that surpasses understanding.

Prayer:
Lord, I confess that I often let my flesh lead — in my thoughts, my habits, and my choices. But I don’t want to live that way. Teach me to walk by Your Spirit. Strengthen me to listen to Your voice above my own impulses. Shape my desires to align with Your will. May my spirit lead my flesh so that I might honor You in all I do. Amen.

Question:
What’s guiding your decisions today — the appetites of the flesh or the convictions of the Spirit?
