The Climb Is Worth It - A Devotional By LeBron Keener

The saying goes, "Nothing Worth Having Comes Easy."

Scripture:
"Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him."
(James 1:12 KJV)

Ethan was an ambitious young man with dreams of becoming a doctor. Not for fame or money, but because he had watched his mother battle a chronic illness for years without proper care. He wanted to help people like her, the ones often forgotten.

But the journey was grueling.

The first year of college crushed him with endless studying and sleepless nights. His grades weren’t stellar. His friends were out enjoying their weekends while he was buried in books. More than once, he asked himself, “Is it worth it?”

Then came the second year — more advanced classes, harder exams, and a growing pile of debt. At one point, Ethan failed an important test. He sat on a park bench, head in hands, ready to give up.

That’s when he noticed an elderly man slowly walking up the path using a cane. The man sat beside him, nodded, and said, “You look like the weight of the world’s on your shoulders.”

Ethan gave a half-hearted chuckle. “Feels like it.”

The man smiled and said, “I was once a coal miner. Worked 40 years underground. It was hard, dark, and dangerous. But I kept going because I wanted a better life for my family. My hands were worn, but my heart was full.”

Then he looked Ethan in the eyes and said, “Nothing worth having comes easy. If it did, it wouldn’t mean much.”

That moment stayed with Ethan. Through every long night and discouraging moment, he remembered that wise old man. Years later, after becoming a doctor, Ethan treated an elderly patient who turned out to be that same man. The miner had come full circle, once giving strength, now receiving care.

Our spiritual walk is no different. Whether you’re trying to grow in faith, resist temptation, or fulfill your calling, the road will be hard. But that doesn’t mean you’re on the wrong path. It often means you're on the right one.

The things of God - peace, purpose, maturity, salvation - they are worth everything. And they are never easy. But they are always worth it.

Reflection Questions:
1. What goal has God placed on your heart that feels hard to reach right now?

2. How can perseverance strengthen your faith?

3. Who can you encourage today that may be close to giving up?

Prayer:
"Lord, remind me that the trials I face are not signs of failure but steps in the journey toward something meaningful. Give me strength when I feel weak and courage when I feel afraid. Help me trust that the things You have for me — though hard to earn — are more than worth it. In Jesus' name, Amen."

Remember: Diamonds are formed under pressure. Oaks grow strong through storms. And faith matures through trials. Stay the course - the climb is worth it.
