The Man With the Lantern - A Devotional By LeBron Keener

"But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly."
(Matthew 6:3-4 KJV)

Long ago, in a small mountain town, there was an old man named Charles who lived at the edge of the woods. He was a quiet man, not well known in town, and often overlooked by the busy people in the marketplace. But Charles had a secret.

Every night, just after sunset, he would light a small lantern, wrap himself in his heavy wool cloak, and disappear into the narrow, cobbled streets. No one knew where he went, and few cared to ask. But if you followed him, you’d see him gently placing loaves of warm bread on doorsteps, slipping coins into empty shoes, leaving wool blankets beside broken windows.

He never knocked. He never waited for thanks. And he never told a soul.

The townspeople began to notice, though. “A miracle!” they whispered. “Someone is watching out for us.” The children believed it was an angel. Some thought it was the priest. A few tried to catch the giver, but Charles always stayed a step ahead.

Years passed. One winter, Charles died quietly in his sleep. At his funeral, only a handful of people came until a child whispered, “That was the man with the lantern.” Then others joined in, realizing the truth. The baker, the widow, the carpenter, even the mayor, they all had received his kindness.

But Micah had never sought a crowd. His reward had never been praise.

Devotional Thought:

Jesus taught that when we give, we should do it in secret, not for applause or recognition. In a world that loves cameras, hashtags, and likes, secret giving is a quiet rebellion, a declaration that God’s eyes are enough.

Charles’ lantern was small, but it burned with heavenly light. His story reminds us that charity is not a show, but a sacrifice, and the real reward is not in people’s applause, but in the smile of our Father who sees what no one else sees.

Prayer:
"Lord, help me give with pure motives. Let me serve not for recognition but out of love. Teach me to be content in Your eyes alone. May I carry my lantern quietly, lighting the way for others, knowing You see every hidden act of love. Amen."
