The Selfless Orphan's Hope
"Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart." (Psalm 37:4)
Snow drifted gently outside the tall windows of Hope Haven Orphanage. The warm golden lights of Christmas flickered on every tree, and the smell of cinnamon and sugar cookies wafted through the halls. But ten-year-old Jason didn’t notice the decorations or the scent of the cookies. His eyes were fixed on the frosted glass, peering out at the street below.
Families passed by, bundled in scarves and laughter. Mothers carrying shopping bags filled with brightly wrapped packages. Dads lifting children up to see the decorations in the store windows. Joy followed them like a trail of twinkling lights.
Jason pressed his hand gently against the cold window. “Maybe one day…” he whispered, not daring to hope too loudly.
Miss Evelyn, the kind-hearted director of the orphanage, stepped into the room and saw the boy standing alone. She walked over quietly and laid a hand on his shoulder.
“You doing alright, sweetheart?” she asked gently.
Jason looked up with soft eyes and a brave smile. “Yes, ma’am. I was just… thanking God.”
Miss Evelyn tilted her head, surprised. “Thanking Him for what, honey?”
Jason turned back to the window and pointed. “For them. For the families. I know a lot of people don’t have that. But look at all of them—together. Laughing. I’m just glad they’ve got each other.” He paused, then added, “And I’m thankful I have a warm bed and food to eat. That’s more than some get.”
Tears welled in Miss Evelyn’s eyes at the selflessness of the little boy’s heart. Before she could speak, the door creaked open behind them. A pair of footsteps entered softly.
Jason turned as a beautiful woman with gentle eyes stepped forward, holding the hand of a tall man with a kind smile.
The woman knelt down and smiled through her tears. “Jason,” she said tenderly, “we’ve come to take you home.”
The man stepped beside her, placing a strong, comforting hand on the boy’s shoulder. “If you’ll have us,” he added. “We’d be honored to be your mom and dad.”
Jason’s lip trembled. He looked back at the window once more, where families were still walking by. Then he looked up at the two strangers—his new parents—and whispered, “Thank You, God,” through a smile full of wonder.

Devotional Thought:
Jason didn’t let his longing turn to bitterness. Instead, he chose to be grateful for what others had and for the blessings he did have. And in doing so, God gave him the deepest desire of his heart—a family to call his own.
This Christmas, may we remember that gratitude opens the door for miracles. When we celebrate others’ joy and give thanks even in our waiting, we create room for God to move in beautiful, unexpected ways.
Prayer:
Lord, help us to be thankful even in seasons of longing. Teach us to rejoice with those who rejoice and trust You with our own hearts. You are the Giver of good gifts, and Your timing is always perfect. Amen.
