When the Unsinkable Sinks - A Devotional By LeBron Keener

“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.”
(Matthew 7:24-25 KJV)

In 1912, the RMS Titanic set sail from Southampton to New York City. She was a marvel of engineering - grand, majestic, and dubbed “unsinkable.” Wealthy passengers dined under crystal chandeliers while those in third class held onto hope for a better future across the ocean.

But on the night of April 14, the unthinkable happened. An iceberg scraped her side beneath the surface - silent and slow - and before dawn, the mighty Titanic slipped beneath the waves, taking over 1,500 souls with her.

What many don’t know is that earlier that day, a passenger had asked a deckhand if the ship was truly unsinkable. Legend says the reply came, “Even God Himself couldn’t sink this ship.”

Whether that was ever said or not, it reflected a dangerous confidence - not in the Creator, but in creation.

But even in the tragedy, there were glimmers of faith.

As the ship tilted toward its end, a band of musicians gathered their instruments. They didn’t run. They didn’t fight. They played. Survivors say the final song drifting across the water was “Nearer, My God, to Thee.” In the face of death, they turned upward.
Some passengers knelt and prayed. Others sang hymns. Lifeboats overflowed with mothers, children, and frightened souls who suddenly realized how fragile life really is.

Reflection:
The Titanic reminds us of a hard truth: Even the strongest things of man can crumble in a single night. No wealth, status, or power can guarantee safety. The only truly unsinkable foundation is Jesus Christ.

Jesus told the parable of two houses - one built on sand, the other on rock. The storms came to both, but only the house on the rock stood firm.

Life will bring icebergs. There will be storms, unexpected collisions, and nights when it feels like everything is sinking. But when your faith is anchored in Christ - not your job, not your money, not your strength - you will stand.

Prayer:
"Lord, help me not to put my trust in things that can fall apart. Teach me to build my life on the solid rock of Your Word, Your promises, and Your love. When storms come, remind me You are the anchor that holds. In Jesus’ name, amen."

Challenge:
Take a moment today to evaluate where you’ve placed your trust. Is your life built on shifting sand or on the rock of Christ? Re-center your heart. Let go of false securities. And choose to build on the foundation that can never be shaken.
