Wrenches, Words, and Witness - A Devotional By LeBron Keener

"Actions Speak Louder Than Words."

"Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone."
(James 2:17 KJV)

Out behind the Sinclair station on Highway 47, where the blacktop fades into gravel and the air smells like diesel and grease, worked a mechanic named Roy. Roy wasn’t much for talking. Folks said you could sit next to him all day and only get a grunt and a nod and maybe a half-smile if he was feeling generous. But what Roy lacked in conversation, he made up for in character.

One sticky summer afternoon, a long-haul trucker named Jake pulled in, sweating and swearing under his breath. His rig was limping with a busted air compressor line and a wheel seal leaking worse than a preacher’s forehead at a revival. He’d already been turned away by two shops that said it was too big a job or not worth the hassle.

Roy didn’t ask questions. He just wiped his hands on a rag, crawled under the cab, and got to work. Jake paced the gravel, muttering complaints, talking about how nobody helps anyone anymore. He even threw in a few colorful words about God and the kind of people who claimed to follow Him.

But Roy? He didn’t flinch.

He worked in silence for nearly four hours. No charge. No lecture. No gospel tract slipped into the glovebox. Just good, honest labor. By sunset, Jake’s truck roared to life like it was brand new.

Jake stood there stunned. “Why’d you help me?” he finally asked. “You don’t even know me.”

Roy wiped his hands again and looked him in the eye for the first time all day.

“I do know you,” he said softly. “You’re just like I was before I knew the Lord.”

Then he patted the side of the truck and turned back toward the garage.

Jake didn’t say much, either. But two weeks later, that same big rig rolled into the Sinclair station again—this time not broken down, but with a Bible sitting on the dashboard and a trucker asking Roy how to really know Jesus.

Reflection:
We live in a world full of noise - words flying like fastballs on social media, slogans on bumper stickers, and people quick to talk about Jesus but slow to live like Him.

But faith that only speaks and never serves… that kind of faith is hollow. It’s in the wrench turns, the quiet sacrifices, the unspoken compassion where the Gospel comes to life.

Roy preached a sermon with every turn of that socket wrench. And Jake heard it loud and clear—not with his ears, but with his heart.

You don’t have to be loud to be heard. Just be faithful.

Prayer:
"Lord, help me live a life where my actions speak louder than my words. Let my service reflect Your love, even when I don’t say a thing. Use my hands, my time, and my heart to point others to You. Amen."

Challenge for Today:
Find one way to show the love of Christ today without using words. Whether it’s helping someone in need, forgiving quietly, or serving unnoticed, let your actions preach.
